Furboa's totally in the same family as squirrels....um right (where's our scientist gwangi when you need him!)
Sorry for the delay. I'm currently without a computer of my own, and am here at the lovely Hennipen County Public Library to check my email and whatnot.
Furboa is in the same order (
Rodentia
) as squirrels, but squirrels are in the family
Sciuridae
, along with chimpmunks and prairie dogs. Jerboa are in the family
Dipodidae
(Latin (...or Greek?) for "two footed", since they're mostly bipedal), while kangaroo rats are in the family
Heteromyidae
. I'm not 100% sure, but I have a strong feeling in my brain that the Sciurids and the Heteromyids are more closely related to one another (that is, they share a more recent common ancestor) than either is to the Dipodids. I'm pretty sure that the similarity in form between the k-rats and the jerboas is not due to ancestory.

My geology textbook has this to say about jerboas and Kangaroo Rats:
I like the little camel guy, too.

Heh. I actually had typed a little sentence about convergence, but then deleted it and put that "similarity of forms due to blah blah blah" thing instead, figuring that not everybody is as big of a geek as I am.
......tho' I do wonder why your geology textbook is talking about convergence. Are you in some "Intro to Paleontology" or somesuch?

No.. it's sort of silly, really. For my school, we have to take two sciences within the same field, so I picked geology. I'm in my 2nd semester of geol, so the class is Earth History. It's about physical earth stuff, but also evolution of animals and such.

Neelyum you are SOOOOO welcome here! Especially after that!
I have such a thing for Sugar Gliders and other flying rodents it isn't even funny. I'd like to fill my apartment with 200 of them...each with their own little designer necktie...

Thanks so much!
Making people giggle at inopportune moments is the main reason we do the show!

Work sent me to California for a few days so it pushed back my own creation of Squirrels wearing Neckties, but as soon as I take my newly created "catch a squirrel wearing a necktie" machine it'll be posted. (Can't tell you exactly what the machine is made out of just yet, but I highly doubt you shall be disapointed. *manical laugh inserted here*)

Scotsman, I think the tophat won me over. You officially created my favorite professional squirrel.

I have a buddy who did an undergrad research project on squirrel behavior. For part of it, he had to get wild squirrels to run through this outdoor maze thingy (they were testing memory and learning in a "natural" environment), and for that, he had to acclimate them to the area. He did this by giving them peanuts left and right, to the point that whenever he came into the park where the experiment was going on, the squirrels would come bounding over and climb up him to try and get the nuts from his hand. He'd be great at putting ties on them, I bet!

I've been writing about this on my Livejournal, and last night after much typing of different phrases that mean "squirrel in a tie" my brain was singing "All the things she said" by t.A.T.u. except singing "Squirrel in a tie" over and over.
