For the record, the make-out scene in Teen Witch is one of the most frightening scenes in all of film history. If you have yet to kiss someone, please do not use that movie as a how-to reference.

ah yes annie...it is a strange family name to have...your instinct to pronounce it phonetically is correct...usually when people ask me how to pronounce it that is my standard response...

"its phonetic."  then if they look at me like they don't know what that means i go on to give them a lesson...i say write it out in three parts...

it is strange how many people think of "apple for the first part.  grade school was very difficult for me, as i was constantly teased for my 'different' sounding name...children can be so creative when it comes to cruelity.  'applebop' is a pleasing variance however, it has a rythm...

the origins of the name are swiss.  in switzerland there are it seems many a prominent abplanalp.  i've heard a few stories about the actual meaning of the name...my favorite and the most specific legend is something like this...

a group of people, i think europeans or something like them were traveling through the swiss alps looking for a place to settle.  as they were walking the cliffs a young boy or baby boy was left behind somehow. he slid down a mountain and into the vicinity of a village occupied by native peoples.  these natives adopted the boy.  the mountain was called planalp.  and 'ab' is supposedly translated to 'man'  therefor the meaning of the name being man from the planalp.

its a charming little story, i think.

oh and i almost forgot as a side note...there is one prominent american abplanalp...a robert abplanalp even, which is somewhat annoying...because of the stigma that surrounds him...  a robert abplanalp developed the aerosol spray nozzle and made trillions of dollars or something off of it...he was also one of richard nixon's closest friends and financial supporter of his political endeavors.  mr. abplanalp's company was called "precision valve"  so that is an unfortunate association with the name, allbeit a somewhat amusing one.

That lipstick, bought for a dollar two seconds before the shoot, was one of the best purchases in my life.
